Forge t the likes of Take That or NSync - when it came to selli ng gazil lions of album s world wide the Backs teet Boys ruled the boy band roost thank s to slush like As Long As You Love Me and perks ome fare such as Every body. After a spell in the pop wilde rness the boys, inclu ding refor med alcoh olic AJ McLea n, retur n with new album Never Gone and a UK tour.


Why did Backs treet split up in the first place ?
We were all fried after our last tour for Black And Blue - we'd been touri ng non- stop for eight years and there was a lot of negat ivity aroun d. I went into rehab and 9/11 happe ned, a coupl e of us lost membe rs of our famil y and so on. We neede d a break and to get away from each other and do our own thing . Nick did his own album , Kevin did Broad way, Howie acted , I worke d on a solo proje ct and my sobri ety and Brian becam e a fathe r. The catal yst for us going back in the studi o was when the boys made a surpr ise appea rance when I was being inter viewe d on Oprah Winfr ey.


Are you still doing the boy band dance routi nes?
It's more about the music now. We dance a littl e bit but not as much as we used to and it's not the boy- bandy s**t of the old days - it's more smoot h and class y. Our bodie s aren' t the way they used to be, we' ve all had wear and tear.


Are there any diffe rence s this time aroun d?
We' re using less of the Europ ean synth sound which we used years ago with Max Marti n. We' ve done a song that Audio slave turne d down and the album 's gone in a more rock/ alter nativ e/ pop vibe.


When did you reali se you were an alcoh olic drug addic t?
I'd been drink ing beer from aroun d the age of 15 but it didn' t get bad till I was aroun d 21, then I got into liquo r. Aroun d the age of 23 I got into Jack Danie l's and cocai ne came into the pictu re. I was drink ing two bottl es of Jack Danie l's a day. It was down to depre ssion , anxie ty and tryin g to find a balan ce betwe en reali ty and fanta sy - of being AJ on stage and Alex off it - and I could n't diffe renti ate betwe en the two. I ended up being AJ all the time. I thoug ht the rock star life was about sex, drugs and rock' n' roll and I was the epito me of that for this group . But it start ed to affec t the group 's moral e, my vocal s were horri ble and there were times I was even drink ing on stage - I'd drink a tequi la by the drum riser befor e the last two songs and be real crazy on stage . It got real bad.


How bad?
I once asked Kevin if he wante d to do coke with me and he said: 'I hope you' re not being serio us'. I prete nded it was a joke but the cocai ne was sitti ng in my pocke t. One time he bange d on my hotel door when we were suppo sed to be openi ng a Littl e Leagu e baseb all game. It was our day off and I'd said I'd do it but when it came to it I didn' t feel like it, so I was like: ' Screw you' . He told me he hated me, he'd never trust me again and then I said I was going to leave the group . One thing led to anoth er and event ually I went to rehab in Arizo na. I've now been sober for two and half years and my life is great . Vocal ly I sound the best I've ever sound ed.


Was it diffi cult to stay off the booze on your recen t club tour?
I went on tour again when I was three month s out of rehab and a littl e nervo us. We had an on- the- road spons or come out with me. Now when I'm on tour I never go out, I stay in my room and watch movie s. I can go to a bar with my buddi es and have a Diet Coke and be conte nt. I still smoke thoug h - one thing at a time.


What was your worst fashi on mista ke as a Backs treet Boy?
We just did a VH1 show Behin d The Music which gave our fans the chanc e to see what we' ve gone throu gh and when we saw the old pictu res we were speec hless . If we'd known how bad we looke d back then we would never have worn those outfi ts. We did one tour when we actua lly wore those big brigh t yello w fishe rman pants for deep sea fishi ng, Tommy Hilfi ger overa lls - the list could go on for days. We used to wear all this s**t by a Germa n compa ny calle d Bad And Mad which was just horri ble.


That' s quite an apt name?
Yeah, exact ly - bad and mad. It's a bit more sophi stica ted this time.
We' re each doing a white and black look

When can we hear your solo offer ings?
We' re busy with Backs treet throu gh the summe r so I'm hopin g to have a solo singl e out next sprin g. It' ll be like Al Green meets Lenny Kravi tz and Lynyr d Skyny rd - somet hing that' s not out there at the momen t. I want Rage Again st The Machi ne produ ction with pop vocal s and live horns . Somet hing that' ll reall y f**k peopl e up.


You made your stage debut as Dopey in Snow White .
Do you plan to pursu e an actin g caree r?
I'd love to. My bigge st dream outsi de of doing what I do now would be to do Phant om Of The Opera . It's my favou rite show of all time and I'd love to be the Phant om. Every one tells me I would be a great actor but you have to have wait till the time is right .

Giysiler konusunda çok haklı. Bir ara gerçekten korkunç giyiniyorlardı ama dönemin modası naparsın. Neyse artık en azından hepsi tarzını buldu. BSB içinde hep AJ'in solo albümünü beklemişimdir, söylediklerinden insanın merakını uyandırıyor. Umarım bu sefer albümü görebiliriz.
